Acoustic problem solved at Oxham Village Hall

How the acoustic problem was solved at Oxham Hall

The hall committee were aware that the acoustics in the main hall were causing difficulties for people with hearing problems.

Report by Tim Watson

July 2026

An acoustic survey found that the hall had less than ideal reverberation levels of 1.9 seconds - more than double the optimum for village halls.

A local company, Woolly Shepherd Ltd were identified as the chosen supplier due to their prior experience in village hall acoustics and not least because their products are made almost totally from sheep’s wool.  Wool as a byproduct from the local farming community was not lost on the committee and was a factor in the decision.

Our past fundraising successes enabled the acoustics panels to be a scheduled part of the ongoing improvements to the hall. As a result twenty-four circular acoustics panels have now been installed and the hall has been resurveyed.

The results are in!

We are delighted that the reverberation levels have now been reduced to less than half, from 1.9 to 0.8 seconds. The effect in the hall is immediately noticeable, and has been commented on by several people, including the weekly Thursday afternoon Pilates classes.

Why not come to the next event at the hall where you will see and hear the difference.  You will be supporting your parish hall and the local community at the same time.

our supporters

We often hold a raffle at our social events at Oxham Hall to help raise funds to maintain our building and improve the facilities that we offer. We are very grateful for the donations of raffle prizes that we receive from our supporters - especially local suppliers in South Molton and further afield in North Devon.

We would like to show our appreciation to them by displaying their business logos here - each linked to their own website. Thank you so much everyone!
